Docs-example hub

Placeholder text and test data that just works

Free, no signup, no tracking, and no JavaScript required — a calm, curated starting point for documentation examples, demos and tests.

Safe to copy https://example.com

Reserved by RFC 2606 and RFC 6761 — safe to use anywhere in examples, never a real service.

Decision helper

I need to…

Pick the job you're doing and start with the tool that fits it best.

  • …show static placeholder text

    Use example.com — the canonical reserved domain, always safe to print in docs and UI mockups.

  • …hit a fake REST/JSON API

    Use JSONPlaceholder — instant posts, comments and users with no auth and predictable shapes.

  • …debug HTTP requests & responses

    Use httpbin.org — echo endpoints that reflect exactly the method, headers and body you sent.

  • …load mock images

    Use Lorem Picsum — real-looking placeholder photos you can seed for deterministic testing.

  • …return a custom response

    Use Beeceptor — design an endpoint and payload in the browser without running any server.

  • …run an offline, self-hosted mock

    Use JSON Server — turn a single JSON file into a local REST API you fully control.

Directory

Documentation-example tools

Hand-picked, code-adjacent resources. Every one of them serves fake or reserved data — treat none of it as production truth.

  • example.com

    Reserved

    The canonical reserved domain for documentation and UI mockups.

    Caveat: resolves to a static page, not your content — don't point monitoring or apps at it.

  • example.org

    Reserved

    The non-profit sibling — interchangeable with the .com in examples.

    Caveat: also static and reserved; never assume it hosts your data.

  • example.net

    Reserved

    The network sibling — the third IANA-reserved documentation domain.

    Caveat: reserved for examples only; not a live service to depend on.

  • JSONPlaceholder

    A free fake REST API with posts, comments, albums and users.

    Caveat: writes aren't persisted — data is fake and resets, so keep it out of production.

  • DummyJSON

    Richer fake datasets — products, carts, users, todos and auth flows.

    Caveat: generated sample content, not real people or products; not for production.

  • httpbin.org

    HTTP request-and-response service for debugging status codes, headers and redirects.

    Caveat: a shared public echo service — don't send secrets and don't build on it.

  • IANA — Example Domains

    The authoritative help page explaining the reserved example domains and RFC 2606 / RFC 6761.

    Caveat: reference material only — it explains the rules, it isn't a test service.

Hit an example endpoint from anywhere

The same request in the tools you already use. Swap the host for example.org or example.net freely — these examples apply to all reserved TLDs and read the same in every locale.

curl
curl -s https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/posts/1
JavaScript — fetch
const res = await fetch("https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/posts/1");
const post = await res.json();
console.log(post.title);
JavaScript — axios
import axios from "axios";

const { data: post } = await axios.get(
  "https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/posts/1"
);
console.log(post.title);
Python — requests
import requests

res = requests.get(
    "https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/posts/1",
    timeout=10,
)
res.raise_for_status()
print(res.json()["title"])

Trust & privacy

Quiet by design

  • No analytics, no trackers. This page ships zero third-party scripts, pixels or cookies.

  • Works without JavaScript. Every link and every snippet is readable with scripting disabled; JS only adds copy-to-clipboard convenience.

  • WCAG-AA, light and dark. Content meets AA contrast in both themes and follows your OS preference automatically.

An honest caveat

Reserved domains and fake-data services are for examples, tests and demos — not production. Don't build apps on them, don't authenticate against them, and don't depend on their content staying the same.
